![]() ![]() What the L1710S does provide is a bright, colorful 1,280x1,024 panel with crisp text and clean graphics for an approximate street price of $370 (as of October 2004). The L1710S also lacks speakers, but most LCD built-in speakers are barely worth their weight in plastic anyway. The LG Flatron L1710S lacks a DVI interface, which the slightly more expensive Sharp LL-T17D4 and the Samsung SyncMaster 172X both have. Navigating the onscreen menu is simple, thanks to dedicated Menu, Select, and arrow buttons on the display's bezel. ![]() If you need more precise adjustments, the onscreen menus allow you to control screen temperature, red/green/blue intensities, and white balance. Most users will never have to go beyond the LightView settings. One of our favorite features is the dedicated LightView button, which opens a list of preconfigured settings for looking at text, movies, or photos under day or night lighting. The LG Flatron L1710S is easy to operate. The bezels are slim, with the top and sides only 0.5 inch wide and the bottom 1 inch wide to accommodate the menu buttons. Unfortunately, the display can't be raised or lowered, and with a top edge sitting at just 16.5 inches high, taller users may need a monitor riser. Both adjustments are smooth and easy to accomplish. The panel tilts forward about 5 degrees and back 30 degrees, and the whole thing rotates 180 degrees in either direction on a lazy Susan under the pedestal. The pedestal takes up about nine square inches of desktop real estate and is stable and wobble-free with an area of horizontal grooves that don't do much for the look but come in handy for holding pens, keys, and other desktop detritus. The panel connects to a wide neck that juts up from a flat, square pedestal. Unlike the BenQ FP783, with its slick design and high-style colors, the Flatron 1710S is a staid, businesslike dark gray, resulting in an uninspired, if clean, design. LG's Flatron L1710S delivers a stripped-down, no-frills but graphically capable, 17-inch LCD at a moderate price. ![]()
